The Indian Embassy in Ukraine has made a desperate and urgent appeal to all its nationals in Kharkiv, asking them to leave immediate ly. The city, sources said, is now virtually under Russian control
In back-to-back desperate tweets in all caps, the Indian Embassy said Indians should reach the towns of Pisochyn, Babai or Bezlyudivka latest by 6 pm local time (9.30 pm IST), on foot, if need be.
However, the closest town, Pisochyn, was 11 km away - a distance, students argued, was impossible to cover on foot, given the heavy shelling.
Shortly before the deadline was to expire, government sources said stranded Indian girl students in Kharkiv were on their way to Ukraine's western border by train and efforts were being made to evacuate the boys as well with the help of Russians.
"A lot of background negotiations with Russians have been going on. Now they, in fact, are helping us in evacuation," a senior government official told NDTV.
