On the eve of , around ten people, including ambulance drivers alnd helpers, were caught on camera while boozing at the postmortem center of the Mira Bhayandar Municipal Corporation (MBMC) in Bhayandar west.

The shocking footage was captured by the editor of a local news channel, Anil Nautiyal, who was subsequently attacked by the accused. According to the police, the incident was report

ed at around 1.30 am on Friday.

After coming to know about the unusual party, Nautiyal rushed to the spot and found 8-10 people, mostly ambulance drivers drinking liquor and partying in the post-mortem room.

As he started filming the illegalities, Nautiyal was abused and attacked by the irate revelers. He managed to escape and informed the local police station about the incident. The police immediately reached the postmortem room but the accused had already fled.

"We have booked an offence under the relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code and stringent Maharashtra Media persons and Media Institutions (Prevention of Violence and Damage or Loss to property) Act against the accused. They will be behind the bars soon,” assured senior inspector Mukutrao Patil.

Intending to raise the serious issue with the MBMC chief, Nautiyal said that the partying in the sensitive autopsy room and misuse of the nearby morgue was a regular affair:

"I even suspect foul play with the corpses in the morgue,"he asserted. 

Not the first time... 

Even in September, 2020, five contractual workers attached to the MBMC's sanitation department and an ambulance driver were caught for drinking in an ambulance used to ferry Covid-19 patients. All the accused were then booked under sections 188 (disobedience), 269 (spreading of infection) of the Indian Penal Code, the Maharashtra Prohibition Act and other relevant sections of the Disaster Management Act.
