Mumbai has been the center of trade and entertainment for centuries. It is also home to some of the best restaurants in Asia. Being this amazing city, it has seen many ups and downs throughout history, but it has never stopped growing. Here are some updates on what's happening there now.
Mumbai is the global financial and entertainment capital of India. It's also the financial capital of the country with a GDP of $900 billion. Mumbai has one of the best ports in the world which handles over 60% of the country’s exports.
Mumbai has 22 million people living in it, making it one of the largest and most populous cities in the world. With so many people living their, it's understandable that there are always new developments happening. There are new skyscrapers being built and more hotels popping up every day to accommodate for this growth.
Some of the recent announcements from Mumbai's government officials include a new project for the development of coastal Mumbai, a metro line linking the suburbs to central Mumbai, and a proposal to provide more affordable housing.
The Maharashtra Housing and Area Development Authority announced that it has been allocated Rs 25 billion from the State Government to develop coastal Mumbai. This will be used for developing infrastructure and providing amenities in the region. The Maharashtra Metro Rail Corporation Limited also announced that it is going to build a metro line connecting eastern and western suburbs along with central Mumbai. It will take less than 30 minutes for commuters to travel between Versova in Eastern suburb and Charkop in Western suburb. In addition, the state government is also proposing an affordable housing policy which will enable people from economically weaker backgrounds to buy homes in Mumbai priced below Rs 7 lakhs per square foot.

It is no surprise that Mumbai has seen many political changes in history. Currently, there are two main political parties in Mumbai: the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the Shiv Sena. The BJP is currently in power with Narendra Modi as Prime Minister while Shiv Sena is a strong second runner up.
While Mumbai's current major parties are focused on national politics, there have been recent controversies surrounding some key city politicians who have been accused of misusing public funds for personal use- a common issue among politicians worldwide. In response to these allegations, a new anti-corruption ordinance was proposed that would require officials to declare their assets and create an independent agency that monitors corrupt practices among elected leaders. One of these agencies will be called Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC).
The BMC is one of the biggest urban local governments in India with a budget of Rs 30 billion ($450 million) and serves as a model for other municipalities across India to implement similar reforms against corruption. The proposal was passed by the BMC with support from both major parties after weeks of debate which resulted in progress being made with regards to tackling corruption at multiple levels of government.
Mumbai has always been a hub for sports. The city has hosted the third-most number of international cricket matches among cities in the world, after London and Melbourne. However, since the terrorist attacks on November 26, 2008, Mumbai's major sporting venues have been used for security reasons.
