Karnataka High Court directs reopening of schools in phases while it resolves the row over wearing of veil news today

In  a setback to the pro-hijab group, the KarInataka High Court on Thursday asked students not to insist on wearing 'religious things' till the court resolves the matter and asked the government to take steps to open educational institutions without delay. Stating that students should maintain peace and tranquility, the three-judge full bench of Chief Justice Ritu Raj Awasthi, Justice J M Khazi and Justice Krishna S Dixit adjourned the case to Monday. "We are considering the issue of whether the wearing of headscarf comes within the Fundamental Rights. 

We are also considering whether wearing a headscart is an essential part of the religious practice," the High Court said. Soon after the court adjourned the case, Karnataka Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai chaired a meeting with senior ministers and decided to reopen schools for Classes 9 and 10 in Karnataka from Monday. A decision on reopening colleges for Classes 11 and 12 will be decided later. No decision has been taken yet on universities and higher education colleges. Home Minister Araga Jnanendra said the police are ready to assist in the reopening of schools, in case of protests. The police have been directed to ensure law and order while maintaining extreme restraint in dealing with students.

He made the sharp observations while hearing two public interest litigation petitions which were filed to insist that only Hindus should be permitted to enter temple complexes and even they should be sporting distinct 'Sanathana Dharma' marks on their forehead, besides wearing appropriate outfits, to prevent the entry of atheists.
